How to Use OneDrive Storage for a Canvas Assignment

Canvas and Microsoft integrate for seamless use of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint file use in Assignments.

Canvas has limited file storage available for each class.

This article explains how to set up an assignment that uses a CIA M365 OneDrive storage for large file submissions.

Steps are presented in a recommended order.
Users are encouraged to follow them in the beginning, but modify based on personal preferences.

OneDrive Storage Preparation (appearance may vary)

Before creating the assignment,  verify or create the necessary folders.

A. Ensure that a Folder named Canvas exists in OneDrive.
B. Inside the Canvas folder create a folder for the course.
C. Inside the Course folder create the assignment folder

  1. Select the elipses (...) or the folder circle (depending on the view)
  2. Select 'Request files'

  1. Name the Request Link (The Assignment name is recommended)
  2. Select 'Next'
  3. Copy the generated Link (The link is upload only and requires a name if the submitter is not logged into their Microsoft Account)
  4. Select 'Done'

The folder owner will be notified by email each time a file is uploaded.
Setting up an email rule for management of notifications is an option with Outlook.

Canvas Assignment

Existing Assignments can be edited to collect in OneDrive.
Follow Steps 5, 7, and 8.

It is recommended to make changes before the assignment begins collecting submissions.

Create the Assignment in the desired course.

  1. Open the Canvas course
  2. Select Assignments
  1. Select '+ Assignment'
  1. Name the Assignment
  2. Describe the Assignment.
    Include the File Request link in a clear Call To Action. For example; "Submit your 'Assignment Name'" Make the Call to Action the link to the File Request. Don't use the long URL.
  3. Designate the point value and other details
  1. Submission Type  Must Be 'No Submission.'
    Remaining settings are up to the Faculty
  2. Save the Assignment

Test the Assignment as a Student

Technically the process ends with Save. However it is strongly recommended that the assignment and the Description Request Link be tested with Student View.

  1. Select 'View as Student'
  2. The Student View
  3. Test the File Request Link
  4. To leave Student View Select 'Leave Student View'

About submission confirmation emails to Faculty

  • Not instant
  • Might appear in 'Other' folder of Outlook
