Student Conduct Hearings and Processes

Updated on

The Student Conduct Process typically begins as a response to a written report submitted to the Office of Student Life and Housing by a student, faculty, staff, or community member who has witnessed or has knowledge about an alleged policy violation. These reports should be written, dated, signed, and preferably, submitted within 10 days of the alleged violation to the Assistant Dean of Students at [email protected]. Additionally, reports of alleged policy violations may come from other sources including but not limited to CIA's Non-Discrimination and Anti-Bias, Harassment, and Intimidation reporting form, from CIA Housing staff, Security personnel, UCI Police, CWRU Police, or from a student conduct hearing which brings to light Code of Conduct violations by another student.

Upon receiving a report of an alleged policy violation, the Assistant Dean of Students will assess whether there is sufficient evidence to warrant a hearing. This may include contacting the reporting and alleged parties for additional information, contacting those indicated in a report for additional information, and consulting with other College offices who may have pertinent information relating to the alleged violation. If there is sufficient evidence to warrant a hearing, the Assistant Dean of Students will outline the type of hearing that is appropriate and contact the student(s) by CIA student email within 10 business days of receiving the report. The respondent(s) will be informed of their right to bring witnesses and/or one non–legal advisor (lawyers are not permitted to participate in or be present at any hearing) to the hearing. In most cases, the respondent(s) will be afforded the right to continue their residence on campus and attendance of classes while the hearing or appeal is pending. However, in serious cases, the Dean of Students may suspend the respondent(s) from classes and/or from College housing before regular disciplinary proceedings can be held if it is determined that such action is reasonable and/or necessary to protect the health, safety, or welfare of the College or any member of the College community.
