Types of Sanctions

Updated on

The following is a non-exhaustive list of possible sanctions for violations of the Student Code of Conduct, provided in alphabetical order:

  • Community Service: Such service is designed to educate the student so they can gain a greater understanding of the impact of the violation on the individual and on the College community. Failure to complete sanctioned community service may result in further disciplinary action and fines. Students receiving community service are required to complete the Community Service Verification Form indicating what type of service they did and with whom. This information will be verified by the Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Disciplinary Probation: A probationary period during which any further violations of College policy may result in more serious disciplinary sanctions, including possible suspension or dismissal from the College.
  • Dismissal: Dismissal entails termination of student status for an indefinite period. The conditions and timeline of readmission (if permitted) shall be stated in a letter of dismissal.
  • Educational Sanctions: Assignments imposed in an attempt to serve an additional educational purpose. These “educational projects” may include any of the following (this list is not exhaustive): completion of educational workshops, creation of an educational newsletter, interviewing a professional in the community, creation of a bulletin board, planning and implementing a program, or writing a paper on a related topic.
  • Expulsion: Expulsion is a permanent termination of student status for the most serious offenses or for repeated offenses.
  • Failing Grade: In cases of academic dishonesty, possible sanctions may include any of the sanctions provided on this list and may also include assignment of an “F” grade for a paper, a project, or an entire course. If the sanctions include assignment of an “F” grade for an assignment or a course, the Assistant Dean of Students will work with the faculty member to update student academic records along with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs to provide needed academic support.
  • Fines: Fines are determined at the sole discretion of the Assistant Dean of Students. Examples of the most common fines are provided at the end of this section. Fines are paid at the Student Accounts Office. The student will receive a receipt which is to be presented to the Assistant Dean of Students as proof of payment. The receipt will be photocopied and the original returned.
  • College Housing Transfer or Dismissal: A student may be transferred to another room or housing unit or dismissed from College housing altogether.
  • Mandated Assessments: Mandated assessments may be performed at Case Western Reserve University’s Counseling Services by trained clinicians, if available, or by a clinician of the student’s choosing after approval by the Assistant Dean of Students. Students requiring utilization of a clinician of their choice assume all costs associated with their assessments. A referral may be made for a student who has demonstrated a significant history of concerning behavior that may include but is not limited to alcohol abuse, drug abuse, addiction, violence toward others, or inappropriate behavior. This sanction is for assessment purposes only and does not constitute therapeutic intervention.
  • Parental Notification: Correspondence from the Assistant Dean of Students to the responsible student’s parents or guardians regarding violation(s) of the Student Code of Conduct. All correspondence with parents and guardians will be conducted in compliance with FERPA.
  • Suspension: A student may be excluded from classes, College activities, College properties, and/or other student privileges for a defined period of time, not to exceed one year.
  • Restitution: Reimbursement for damage to or misappropriation of College property. At the discretion of the Assistant Dean of Students, restitution may also take the form of appropriate community service. Any funds required as restitution must be paid at the Student Accounts Office. The student will receive a receipt which is to be presented to the Assistant Dean of Students as proof of payment. The receipt will be photocopied and the original returned.
  • Warning: Often levied after a first offense, a warning places the student on notice that a repeated violation may result in more severe disciplinary action.
