1.6 Emergency Procedures

Updated on

Interactive Media Lab follows MidTown Collaboration Center (MCC) and CIA emergency protocols at all times, including during approved after-hours use. An IML staff member will always be present on site during after-hours operations (unless otherwise noted for scheduled classes) and serves as a primary point of coordination in the event of an emergency. In the event IML staff are not present, contact MCC Security.

Always call 911 first for medical emergencies, fire, or dangerous criminal activity.

After contacting 911:

  1. Notify IML Front Desk or IML Operations Manager as soon as it is safe to do so.

  2. Stay with the affected individual if safe.

  3. Direct emergency responders when possible.

  4. All incidents must be reported via the IML Incident Report Form located in every Studio Space within 24 hours.

Fire Safety

A fire emergency is defined as any situation involving actual fire or detectible smoke (visible or odor). Stay calm, think clearly, and instill confidence in patrons, visitors, and other tenants.

  1. Rescue: In the event of a fire emergency, the priority is to remove people from the area of immediate danger to a safer location. Rescue any person injured or likely to be injured by flames or smoke if this can be done without serious risk to you.

  2. Activate the Alarm – Report Immediately: Anyone who discovers a fire must immediately report the fire location.

  3. Activate a fire alarm signal box.

  4. Dial 911. Inform the dispatcher of the location of the fire. Do not assume they know where you are located. Be specific about the location of the fire or smoke within the building. Time is crucial in notifying the fire department. Then contact MCC security at 216-615-7145 to report the fire and your location.

  5. Confine: To confine a fire or the spread of smoke, close all doors, including bathrooms, offices, and hallways.

  6. Extinguish: Portable fire extinguishers are located throughout the MCC. They are available to use to extinguish early-stage fire if the reporter is comfortable in that process and will not be placed in harm’s way. Extinguishers are classified by a latter which indicates the class of fire for which it is appropriate:

  7. “A” for ordinary combustibles (wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics)

  8. “B” for flammable liquids (oils, greases, tars, oil-based paints, lacquers, and flammable gases)

  9. “C” for electrical equipment

  10. “D” for combustible metal fires

Evacuation Procedures

In the case of a fire or other related emergencies, follow the following steps.

Evacuation Steps

  1. Stop all work and secure hazardous materials if safe to do so.

  2. Exit the building using the nearest safe exit.

  3. Do not use elevators.

  4. Assist individuals with disabilities as needed.

  5. Close doors behind you to contain fire or smoke.

  6. Proceed to the designated meet-up point.

  7. Call MCC Security at 216-615-7145 if someone is injured, trapped, or missing.

Designated Meet-Up Points

- Primary: MCC Parking Lot (north side of the building)

- Secondary: Lawn area across Euclid Avenue (if primary is inaccessible)

Accountability

1. Supervisors and instructors should account for all individuals in their group.

2. Report missing persons to MCC Security or emergency personnel immediately.
