3.1 IML Access + Expectations

Updated on

Faculty and staff access to the IML is intended to facilitate instructional use, project development and supervised student activity while maintaining safety, security, and equitable access to shared resources.

Card Access + MCC Badge Requests

Faculty and staff have access to IML exterior doors and keycard spaces during operational hours.

Access to MCC exterior doors other than the main entrance on E. 66th street requires an MCC issued badge. MCC badges must be requested through the IML Operations Manager at least two weeks in advance.

Check-in Procedures

Faculty and staff must check in at the IML Front Desk when intending to use studios or labs outside of regularly scheduled class times.

IML Staff must be present in the facility during visits that involve external partners or visitors unless otherwise arranged with the IML team.

After Hours Restrictions + Approvals

Use of the IML outside of posted operational hours requires prior approval from IML staff.

After-hours access may require:

  • Additional staffing

  • Security coordination with MCC

  • Advance scheduling

Faculty and staff may not access or supervise IML spaces after hours without explicit authorization.

Guest Policy

Faculty and staff may host guests only in accordance with IML guest and visitor policies. Visit details must be shared with the IML Operations Manager in advance.

All guests must always be supervised and may not operate equipment or access studios independently unless explicitly authorized by IML staff. Faculty and staff are responsible for the conduct and compliance of their guests.

Client Collaborations with Students in the IML

The IML supports faculty-led collaboration between students and external clients. This section outlines how clients may interact with IML spaces and equipment when working in collaboration with students and clarifies faculty responsibilities related to access, billing, and liability.

All client involvement in student projects using the IML must be approved in advance and coordinated through faculty and IML staff. Faculty are responsible for ensuring client activity complies with all IML policies and communicating project scope.

Use of the IML and associated costs must be billed to the client as part of the project proposal, estimate, or agreement prior to the start of the project.

When collaborating with students in the IML, clients may be present in approved spaces only under supervision. Clients are not permitted to use or handle IML equipment unless a valid Certificate of Insurance is on file.

MCC Common Spaces

Access to MCC shared spaces is available to all CIA faculty and staff, including the Cafe, Innovation Hall, meeting pods (bookable through the MCC Front Desk), and the RISE Conference Room (by request through the IML Operations Manager). Use of all shared spaces is subject to MCC policies, availability, and any applicable reservation requirements.
